The Friend We Have In Jesus

Psalm 86:12 I will praise You, O Lord my God, with all my heart, And I will glorify Your name forevermore.

Everyone has different goals in life. Some may have physical goals, such as working out to stay fit. Others may have intellectual goals, such as the pursuit of knowledge in a particular domain.

While the range of goals that humans set for themselves grows more diverse by the day, there is one emotional goal that ties us together – the quest to find our true friend!

Zacchaeus was the chief tax collector in Jericho. Back in the day, tax collectors were among the most despised people in society for their corrupt practices. Therefore, it is safe to say that Zacchaeus had no true friends, maybe no friends at all, though he had pots of money.

Certainly, he was in search of true friendship. After all, money can’t buy everything!

Little did he know that he would find his true friend while perched on a sycamore tree.

Zacchaeus was a short man, but he had a towering desire to catch sight of Jesus. Therefore, he climbed up a sycamore tree and lay in wait for Jesus to pass by.

When Jesus reached the spot, He looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today.” – Luke 19:5

And thus, began a friendship that was birthed from desire – Zacchaeus’ desire to see Jesus and Jesus’ desire to establish a friendship that would stand the test of time and beyond!

A few weeks later, Jesus was crucified to deliver mankind from the stronghold of sin. John writes, “Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.” – John 15:13

This Friendship Day let’s initiate a friendship with a true friend – one who knows what we’ll say before we do, knows what we need before we ask, and understands us better than we know ourselves!

In time we’ll say, “What a friend we have in Jesus!”
