The Power of Speech

Proverbs 18:21 – “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those who love it will eat its fruit.”

Speeches made by powerful world leaders have changed the course of history. But it’s not just their words that matter. The simple conversations you and I have with our friends, family, neighbors and co-workers also play a major part in how our lives turn out. Today’s verse clearly emphasizes that our words have the power to spell out life or death. The Bible also likens our tongues to bridles that determine the direction of a horse’s path, and a rudder that has the power to turn a ship around.

It’s important that you choose your words carefully. Don’t allow empty words to come out of your mouth. Those who listen to you will, in some way, be influenced by what you say. Choose to speak words that are filled with life – positive, kind, helpful and encouraging. The Holy Spirit can guide your thoughts, and in turn your words, if you let Him.

Prayer: Lord, I surrender my tongue to you today. Guard my mouth and help me speak words that only build people up. May my speech be generous with praise and cautious with criticism. Let everything I say be guided by Your Holy Spirit. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
