The Question of Separation

Mark 10:9

Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate.

There was a very interesting debate going on between two schools of thought. One view said that divorce can be granted on any issue, while the other view was that the only legal ground for granting divorce was adultery. This matter was presented to the Lord Jesus when He sealed the standard saying, ‘what the Lord has joined together, let no man separate.’

This was in the context of marriage. So what happens to those stuck in marriages where their partners refuse to see their perspective or walk in their shoes? This brings us to another important verse in 2 Corinthians 6:14 which says, ‘do not be unequally yoked or bound with unbelievers.’ Imagine two animals yoked together-one taller, stronger and faster and the other shorter, weaker and slower. Would they be able to successfully perform whatever task is set before them? Would they be able to work together with varying values? What will happen when they come across obstacles of many kinds?

We need to be wary of all kinds of partnerships in life, the most important of which is marriage. Be prayerful and seek the Lord in this decision. Be aware of the yoke you are getting under in the journey of your marriage is lifelong. For those already married, surrender your marriage to the Lord, seek godly counsel, make diligent efforts towards your spouse. Christ Jesus did make an exception, which should not be misunderstood as a command. So let us ask the Lord Jesus to strengthen our marriages with divine cords that cannot be broken. May He grant us grace, forgiveness, tolerance, prudence, compassion and above all love that we can share towards our spouses. In Jesus’ Name!
