Matthew 6:20-21
“Lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
Today’s scripture from the Gospel of Matthew, preached by Jesus on the Mount, conveys a profound message about the nature of worldly and spiritual treasures. The essence of the passage centers on where our true priorities lie.
A person is truly defined by where their heart and mind are centered. Worldly treasures go beyond mere wealth and possessions—they include status, success, and recognition. It’s easy to become consumed by these pursuits and seek validation through them. However, Jesus reminds us that all these things are fleeting; they can never provide lasting satisfaction or true fulfillment. In contrast, the treasures of heaven are eternal and bring enduring peace.
As children of God, we are called to prosper and excel in our respective fields and to enjoy a successful life. However, we must never place our confidence in these temporary achievements. In a world constantly changing, only the true and living God remains our steadfast and faithful companion.
How we can make a consistent effort to implement today’s scripture in our everyday lives:
1. Deepening relationship with the Lord: Spend time in prayer and meditate on God’s word.
2. Serving others: Look for opportunities to serve in church, college, family, or the workplace.
3. Sharing the Gospel: Always point towards Christ through words and actions.
4. Practicing generosity: Consider all that God gives—energy, talents, and finances—and be generous in sharing with those who are in need.
5. Living with an eternal perspective: Regularly keep in mind that everything around us is temporary but how we live today has everlasting significance.
Very interesting-especially after hearing of plane crash, Israel bombing of it’s enemies, how important to set our priorities correctly.
