Psalm 23:5
You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; my cup runs over.
Psalm 23 is one of the most familiar psalms written by King David. It’s a beautiful picture of God as our Shepherd, the One who leads, protects, restores and stays with us through every season. David begins with green pastures and still waters, walks through the valley of the shadow of death, and finally arrives at a place of abundance and security.
A prepared table represents provision, acceptance, honour and security. What makes the picture even more powerful is that it’s prepared in the presence of enemies. God does not always remove opposition before He blesses us. Sometimes He prepares a place for us right in the middle of what was meant to intimidate us.
We see something similar in Joseph’s life. His brothers betrayed him and sold him. Yet God eventually placed him in a position of authority and provision in Egypt. What others intended for harm, God used for a greater purpose.
The oil in today’s verse represents being refreshed, honoured and set apart. David knew what it was like to be anointed by Samuel while still a shepherd boy, long before he sat on the throne. God’s calling on his life existed even while his circumstances looked ordinary.
The overflowing cup signifies abundance. David had known rejection, danger, wilderness seasons, and battles, yet he could still say that God’s goodness was more than enough.
Today, your circumstances may not look abundant. But remember: God prepares a table before you, even before your situation changes. He refreshes you when you are weary and fills your cup to overflowing, even in seasons of lack.
