Who Saves the Righteous?

Psalm 37:16-17

A little that a righteous man has is better than the riches of many wicked. For the arms of the wicked shall be broken, but the Lord upholds the righteous.

Psalm 37 consists of words of wisdom from King David, contrasting the righteous and the wicked.

Who are the righteous and the wicked according to the psalmist? The righteous are those who trust in the Lord and commit their ways to Him. The ones who depart from evil and do good, waiting patiently for the Lord. On the contrary, the wicked are those who refuse to trust God and go about their foolish ways. They use their power, resources, or evil schemes to gain advantage over the upright (Psalm 37:12).

Today’s verse points out that the little the righteous have is enough, for the Lord will sustain them and their generations. It could be frustrating to watch the wicked succeed and have abundant riches, but all that is short-lived. God loves justice and will punish them. The righteous will inherit the promised land while the wicked will be cut off forever.

What do we do when confronted by evil? Do we succumb to the pressure or stand strong in our faith? Every day, we face numerous situations where we have to decide between doing the right thing and taking corrupt shortcuts. No matter the consequences, seek and trust God and always choose to do good. Do not fret (Psalm 37:1); instead, hold on to God, and He will exalt you in His perfect time.

Remember, our best efforts don’t make us righteous, but our faith in Jesus does. So, let’s aim to live faithfully before and unto God. The Lord saves the righteous!
