Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure. Philippians 2:12-13
One of the most popular resolutions around the globe is to exercise or work out regularly in the new year. Coming off the Christmas season, at least for the first few weeks, we try and keep up to lose that extra pounds. Even if you have a clean bill of health, it is imperative to follow a workout routine to remain fit for your physical well-being. So if a workout for our body is vital, what about our eternal souls?
In today’s verse, we read about working out our salvation. Why and how?
Paul advises those who are disciples of Christ to work out their salvation daily with the fear of the Lord. Our objective is to grow in Christlikeness, a task for which only God can help and equip us.
Our feeble efforts at righteousness are like filthy rags and will only puff us up with pride and self-righteousness. Instead, we should allow the Holy Spirit to be our trainer, surrendering fully to His will and for His pleasure. When our self dies daily, God can take over our lives completely. That is how we can work out our salvation.
We should not be chosen frozen and display immature salvation. Let God do His will through the purpose of His salvation in us. It’s marvellous to watch what He does in and through our lives. No eye has seen, no ear has heard what God has in store for those who love Him(1 Corinthians 2:9).
