John 1:17 – “For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.”
If you have never lied, or broken a traffic rule, raise your hand!
Of course we need laws, rules, regulations to keep the world running in order. And God gave Moses certain rules, commandments, which we are supposed to live by, to help us know the difference between right and wrong. These commandments were good then, and they are still good today, because our God is the same yesterday, today and forever.
However, as asked before, which one of us has never, ever lied? Even the smallest tiniest most innocent lie, is still – a lie.
And we ought to be so thankful to our God who has given us his Son, Jesus Christ, who brought into our lives Grace. Grace personified. Mercy personified. Love personified. Forgiveness personified.
It is only because of His love and mercy, that we, imperfect humans, can approach the Throne of Grace. And we so need grace in our lives, because the “ “law” doesn’t offer forgiveness, it is opposed to grace.” (Gill)
In John 1:16, the verse that precedes, we read: “ out of the fullness of His grace He has blessed us all, giving us one blessing after another.” This means that our gracious Jesus, who himself is full of grace and truth (John 1:14) continues to pour on us, undeserving and imperfect human beings, grace upon grace, blessing upon blessing, mercy upon mercy, and out of his fullness, more love, more mercy, more forgiveness!
“Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.” (Hebrews 4:16)
