Matthew 22:39  And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbour as yourself.’

When the Lord called Abraham to follow Him, He commanded him to do just one thing – to get away from his old life completely. He said, Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you.” – Genesis 12:1

Though Abraham left his hometown, he did not obey God fully. He took his nephew Lot along with him.

Soon conflict for turf broke out between Lot’s shepherds and Abraham’s men. And when it reached boiling point, they decided to part ways.

Abraham loved Lot (his neighbour) as himself, though Lot was not the easiest person to love. He was selfish and greedy!

When they decided to move away from each other, Abraham in his love let Lot choose the direction in which he wanted to go. On the other hand, Lot in his greed choose the most fertile and well-watered plains to call home and left the remains for Abraham.

After Abraham allowed Lot to choose the better half of the land, the Lord said, “Look around from where you are, to the north and south, to the east and west. All the land that you see I will give to you and your offspring forever.” – Genesis 13:14-15

Though Abraham had not fully obeyed God and carried a “Lot” of baggage, the Lord blessed Him when he obeyed the principle of loving one’s neighbour like oneself, even when it wasn’t easy to do!
