1 John 1:9
If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
Sin and death are universal. Sin is not just breaking God’s law but also includes anything that breaks the heart of the One who loves deeply. Consequently, it separates us from God, hides His face, and closes His ears to us (Isaiah 59:2).
Confession is the admission of sin. It helps us bring our darkness out into His cleansing light. However, repentance must go hand in hand with confession. A repentant heart will have remorse and a willingness to change. It is certainly a work of God through the conviction of the Spirit.
We receive forgiveness by the shed blood of Jesus on the Cross. Nothing else can wash away our sins. When God forgives, He remembers our sins no more, even if our sins were red as crimson (Hebrews 8:12). Then, we are no longer separated from God; His face is not concealed anymore. We can taste His favour now. Our prayers become a delight to His ears. Another key point is that He empowers us to overcome every unrighteousness. Through Christ in us, sin has no dominion over us!
How do we confess? Go to Him with each specific sin. You may have failed a thousand times, but He is faithful to forgive if you repent (Psalms 103:3). Allow the Holy Spirit to convict you to take corrective action. Also, do not end your confession without thanksgiving for His mercy.
Let us not forget that God is holy and just. He will not overlook any sin; He cannot! He will judge every sin ever committed in this world. Our sins are either forgiven in Christ or judged with us on Judgement Day.
Prayer: Lord, create in me a pure heart. Forgive my hidden faults and my intentional sins. May they not rule over me. I receive Your forgiveness. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
