Psalm 121:8
The Lord shall preserve your going out and your coming in from this time forth, and even forevermore.
Psalm 121 is known to be a traveler’s song. The Israelites sang it on the long road up to Jerusalem. A long way from home, exposed and on foot, they sang to remind themselves who was watching over them. Ever since, the psalm has stayed close to God’s people. It is one of the favorites in Christian homes even today, where children are taught to learn it by heart.
The psalm ends with a promise wide enough to cover a whole life: The Lord will keep your going out and your coming in, both now and forevermore. “Going out and coming in” – it is the Hebrew way of saying “everything”. Both the leaving and the returning. The work and the rest. The hellos and the goodbyes. The packing up and the unpacking.
God is not only with you at the destination; He keeps you on the journey as well. And this promise does not expire. The same God who watched over His people then is watching over you now. Wherever you are headed today, you are not going alone.
So, trust that there is no day ahead when you will step beyond His care. However far the road stretches before you, you can walk it unafraid, knowing that you are watched over in every going out and every coming in, now and always, because the Lord is with you. He’s got your back!
