LORD, Our Shepherd

Psalm 23:1 The Lord is my Shepherd; I shall not want.

We are all aware of this verse; in all the simplicity of this verse, we find an important act. An act of proclaiming the Lord as our Shepherd; One who isn’t distant but intimately cares for everyone. With such a Shepherd, the psalmist confidently declares, “I shall not want.”

The metaphor of God as a shepherd is immensely significant. Jesus identifies Himself as the Good Shepherd in John 10:11, “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.” By stating so, He is reminding us that He is the reference that David makes – the Shepherd who provides guidance, protection and care for his sheep.

In Philippians 4:19, Paul reminds us by saying, “And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.” This verse assures us believers, God’s sheep, that God, our Shepherd, supplies all our needs according to His riches in glory. In following our Shepherd, we discover contentment, for He provides abundantly all that we need, as we see in 2 Corinthians 9:8.

As we embrace the Lord as our Shepherd by proclaiming this verse into our days, we recognize His attentive guidance and provision. Hence, God as He says in Isaiah 40:11, will tenderly care for His sheep.

Today, let’s find comfort in the truth of Psalm 23:1. Our Shepherd ensures we lack nothing essential.
