Lord’s Providence Prevails in our Lives

Psalm 107:1- Oh, give thanks to the Lord, for He is good! For His mercy endures forever.

Why is the term “Mercy” only or mainly associated with the name, ‘God’?
When we read through Psalms 107, it is evident that the subject of the verses is – The Israelites. God brought them out of the hands of the enemy. Though they:

  • went about their life “in a solitary way” acting like they didn’t need God
  • rebelled against the words of God and condemned God’s counsel
  • gave into transgressions and iniquities
  • went closer to God and then slipped away from Him, tossing to and fro, or staggering like a drunken man

Then, what did God do to the Israelites? He:

  • Redeemed them from the enemy’s hands
  • Gathered them out of the land of slavery
  • Delivered them out of distress whenever they called out to Him
  • Satisfied the longing soul and filled the hungry soul with goodness
  • Brought them out of darkness(shadow of death) and broke their bands in sunder
  • Sent his Word and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions
  • Calmed the storm and stilled the waves
  • Blessed them so that they were multiplied greatly; they didn’t suffer with any decrease in their cattle

What was the result of God’s goodness and mercy?
The righteous recognized God’s goodness and mercy and rejoiced: iniquity tried to stop the rejoicing and praising of the goodness of God.
Those who were wise observed and understood the lovingkindness of the Lord.
Do we behave like the Israelites by flip-flopping between sinning and later calling out to God for mercy, or do we praise God and rejoice for what He has done in our lives?
