Psalm 100:5
For the Lord is good; His mercy is everlasting, and His truth endures to all generations.
Psalm 100 is a song of praise that urges us to shout for joy and worship the Lord with gladness. It overflows from a heart that is grateful to God – not specifically for something He has done, but simply for who He is. Today’s verse recounts the reasons why we praise the Lord: He is good, and His mercy, love, and faithfulness endure forever.
It’s easy to praise God when everything is going right in our world. We proclaim it loudly, “God is good all the time, and all the time, God is good!” But do we still believe God is good in our difficult seasons – when things don’t go the way we wish? The truth is that God’s goodness does not vary according to our circumstances. He is always good.
Today’s verse says that God’s mercy is everlasting. The Hebrew word for “mercy” is “hesed”, which refers to God’s steadfast, covenant love. It is the never-ending, never-failing love that God has for His people. It is a love that does not change based on external circumstances but remains constant through the ages.
So, on our best days and our worst days, God is good, and His love for us is faithful and true. Even through our pain and suffering, we can trust that God reigns sovereign. He has good plans for us that we may not always understand in the moment. But we can remain confident that our good God is always with us, and He will work all things out for our good.
