Psalm 89:1
I will sing of the mercies of the Lord forever; with my mouth will I make known Your faithfulness to all generations.
What a beautiful declaration of praise, emphasising God’s mercy and faithfulness not only to us but also to the generations to come. It was written at a time when David’s monarchy was in crisis, but the psalmist chose to remember God’s faithfulness and mercy. It is a passage of thanksgiving, trust, and intentionally remembering God’s faithfulness above fear, defeat, and restlessness.
This psalm teaches us that lament can also be an act of worship. Even in difficult and perilous times, God’s faithfulness never changes. His mercies are steadfast and new every morning.
The psalmist watched a kingdom decline after hearing promises of greatness. Even today, we see the same: governments, corporations, and leaders fail us. Human systems may fail, but God’s character remains constant. Many times, we know and believe that God is guiding our lives, yet we still face hardships.
The psalmist felt something similar: God’s promises were real, but his circumstances were different from what he expected. Yet, he came to God in honesty and did not hide anything from Him. He reminded himself of God’s past faithfulness and strengthened his hope.
Worship is a declaration of trust when the answer has not yet arrived. Let’s build our confidence not on changing circumstances but on the unchanging character of God. We can trust God’s faithfulness even when we cannot understand His plan. When we look back, we will see that He has always been faithful and has heard us when we called upon His name.
The Bible encourages us to fix our eyes on God and look towards heaven. Why? Because what we focus on shapes our perspective. So, let’s be encouraged. Is there anything too hard for God (Jeremiah 32:27)? No, there is nothing.
