Isaiah 40:11 – “He will feed His flock like a shepherd; He will gather the lambs with His arm, and carry them in His bosom, and gently lead those who are with young.”
Sheep are gentle creatures who are easily spooked by sudden movements. In order to properly care for the sheep, the shepherd too needs to be gentle with them. He takes care of them day in and day out, making sure they each receive adequate food, water, fresh air and rest. A good shepherd makes sure that each one is cared for and not one is left behind.
In today’s verse, we see God leading His people like a shepherd leads his sheep. The Lord feeds us with His Word and provides for our needs. He gathers the helpless ones in His arms and carries them close to His heart. The Lord is indeed close to the brokenhearted and He saves those who are crushed in the spirit. (Psalm 34:18)
Much like a shepherd pays extra attention to those in the flock who are hurt, wounded, tired or weak, so does the Lord grant an extra measure of His grace to those of us who need Him. We may struggle in our weakness, but when we lean on God, it is His strength that is manifested in us and through us. Remember you are not walking alone; your Gentle Shepherd is beside you, helping you every step of the way.
