Psalm 9:9
The Lord also will be a refuge for the oppressed, a refuge in times of trouble.
Taken by itself, this verse is a beautiful and deeply reassuring promise. But if we read just a few verses earlier, we see the Lord described as the righteous Judge who executes justice and brings judgment upon the wicked. What really catches our attention in today’s verse is that little word: ALSO.
God is not a cold judge who administers justice merely as a clinical duty or to protect His reputation. Yes, He delivers perfect justice, but His heart is always turned toward the oppressed. We live in a world that constantly speaks about justice and advocates for it, but rarely practices it. Nor does it always empathise with or serve the oppressed when life becomes genuinely difficult.
The compassionate nature of God is reflected perfectly in Jesus Christ. He came to bring grace and salvation to the oppressed, specifically those oppressed by sin and headed toward eternal damnation. God is completely just, but He is also the One who transforms lives and changes the narrative. His grace shines most brightly in the lives of those who turn to Him and accept the refuge He freely offers.
If you are facing oppression, hardship, or unfair treatment today, be assured that justice is in God’s hands. Your main focus shouldn’t be on the fight but on receiving the grace God provides and finding refuge in Him. Rest in the assurance that while God is the righteous King of kings, He is also your loving Father and friend.
