Psalm 22:28
For the kingdom is the Lord’s, and He rules over the nations.
David composed this psalm, beginning with a cry of suffering and concluding with a thanksgiving prayer. God heard each of David’s pleas and delivered him from all his troubles. Psalm 22:1 was quoted by our Lord, Jesus, before His crucifixion. Although our Saviour endured the cup of suffering, it was not wasted but was for the greater glory of God. Today, our King is alive and seated on the Throne!
David was an exceptional king of Israel. He fought and won many battles under God’s guidance. He united the divided nation of Israel and brought the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem. Though David was a great king, he recognised that the Lord was with him and had established him on the throne (2 Samuel 5:10,12). Basically, King David surrendered to the sovereignty of the Almighty God.
In today’s verse, David emphasises God’s sovereign rule and His Kingship over all the nations of the world. That means, actually, the governments of the world are under God’s rule. He has the final say in every decision-making, and all power, honor, and glory belong to Him.
Often, we are guilty of expressing dissatisfaction with our government officials and their decisions, taking sides with either the ruling party or the opposition. Instead, we have to look to the One-Above-All-Names in prayer. Today, as India celebrates its Republic Day, let’s be thankful for our nation. It’s our responsibility to pray for our country, government bodies, and officials (1 Timothy 2:1-2), and God will surely reward us with peaceful lives under their authority. Ultimately, the Lord’s is the kingdom, and we are all under His sovereign Kingship.
