James 1:17
Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.
James makes it clear that evil temptations never originate from God, since every good and perfect gift comes from Him. This supports his earlier teaching that God does not tempt anyone to evil (James 1:13). Divine gifts stand in contrast to the evil that arises from human desire. The phrase “good gift” emphasizes the source and intention of God’s giving, while “perfect gift” points to its complete and mature outcome. Together, they affirm that only what is truly good and life-giving comes from above.
God’s goodness during our trials reminds us that life’s difficulties are meant to strengthen and refine us, not lead us into sin. Because God’s purposes are always good, nothing in this world compares to His goodness as the Father of lights and the Creator of the heavenly bodies. This title draws on imagery from the stars and heavens, yet it highlights a deeper truth. While creation experiences constant change – day and night, light and shadow – God Himself is pure and unchanging.
God is unchanging in character, unlike the shifting shadows cast by the sun and moon. Therefore, we can trust Him completely, knowing that every truly beneficial and meaningful gift flows from the Father who never deceives, acts inconsistently, or proves unreliable. Ultimately, He has given us new life through the word of truth (James 1:18), reminding us that everything good in us begins with Him.
This Lenten season, let’s respond to God’s unchanging goodness with humility. Let’s repent of the ways we have pursued lesser desires and realign our hearts with the Giver of all good things.
