Psalm 92:1
It is good to give thanks to the Lord, and to sing praises to Your name, O Most High.
Psalm 92 is a hymn of thanksgiving and praise to God, specifically celebrating the blessings of the Sabbath. The Sabbath is the day God has hallowed. We consecrate it to Him by turning from busyness (Isaiah 58:13-14) and devoting ourselves to praise. It is good – not only in God’s sight, but also for us. Praise is beneficial to the heart, pleasant, and deeply enriching.
It is good to thank God, for He deserves our gratitude. Giving thanks to God is a small return for His daily mercies, yet His Spirit calls it good. Devout praise is always appropriate; it is never out of season. Thanksgiving benefits the one who offers it and those around who witness it. It is an activity in which anyone can participate.
Nature itself teaches us to thank God. Birds sing, and brooks gurgle as they flow. Silent worship is sweet, but vocal worship is sweeter. A central feature of Sabbath worship is celebrating God’s greatness over creation and His goodness to the faithful. Worship does not change God’s stature, but it changes our perspective of Him. Often, the act of praise itself awakens joy within us. It is good to praise God, who rules the universe, counts the stars, and possesses perfect understanding.
During this Lenten season, as we quiet our hearts in repentance and reflection, may God’s greatness draw us to humility and trust. Let’s sing His praise with renewed gratitude, proclaim His righteousness throughout our day, and allow praise to shape our repentance and deepen our devotion.
