What Meekness Means

Psalm 37:11 NKJV

“The meek shall inherit the earth, and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace.”

The dictionary defines meek as being quiet, gentle, and submissive. When you look at this definition, you may wonder how anyone can survive in this world by being meek. The standards of the Bible might seem like foolishness to people of the world but there is great reward in living by it.

In today’s verse we see three rewards promised to the meek:

  • They will inherit the earth
  • They will delight themselves
  • They will have an abundance of peace.

Meekness does not mean letting others walk all over you. It means standing up for what you believe to be true, knowing that God is on your side. Meekness refers to an attitude of humility – not necessarily thinking less of yourself but thinking of yourself less. It’s denying yourself and following what the Lord Jesus Christ wants for your life.

Meekness is marked by patience, endurance, self-control, and love. It’s fueled by unwavering trust in our Creator – indisputable faith that God’s got our back even in the worst circumstances. While the world might associate meekness with weakness, the truth is that the meek need a great deal of strength to remain calm and resilient in the face of adversity.

The world might tell you that you need to be aggressive and ruthless to survive in this world. But there is a better way. Depend on the Lord for wisdom, grace, and strength to embrace meekness and you will thrive – in this world and for all eternity.
