Isaiah 46:4 – “And even to your old age I am he; and even to hoar hairs will I carry you: I have made, and I will bear; even I will carry, and will deliver you.”
God reminds his special people that he was ‘carrying’ (looking after) them even before their birth. “You yourselves have seen what I did to Egypt, and how I carried you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself.” He would continue to do this all their lives. The false gods represented by dumb dead idols, who others worshipped, had to be carried; on the contrary, God carries His people. God carried them from before their birth and He promises to continue to carry them till their end. This is the same Fatherly care that Jesus spoke of when he said that the Father who looked after the sparrows would care that much more for His people. It is we who need to understand that God made us, that we are valuable to Him and that we need to trust that He will carry us. Do you have to carry your gods or idols or what you hold most dear, or does your God carry you? Do we lay our trust in our job, our position, our finances, our family, our spouse, or do we trust in God to carry us through our life?
Even our mother’s maternal care begins to waiver as we grow up, but Jehovah cares for us even to the end of life. Till our old age, God is ‘I am’ – the same; unchangeable with the same tenderness, same affection, same care. Age should not make us less dependent on God, and experience should only teach us to lean on His sustaining grace. The same God who looked after us before we were infants will not leave us in the lurch during our trials or ageing years. 1- We need God’s protection and care. 2- God will never leave us nor forsake us because this is His promise. 3- The very God who is the God of infancy and childhood will be the God of our age. Those who have walked in God’s ways in the vigor and strength of their life, will never be cast off ‘when they are old and gray-headed.’; and God will definitely be their Protector over their ‘second childhood’. Remember this is our God – the same in His love and affections; in His sympathy and care; in His power and protection; in His promises, truth, and faithfulness to us in our last days, as at the first moment of our conversion.
Our spiritual life is upheld by God’s grace, as constantly as our natural life by His providence. Our Author will be the Finisher of our well-being. God will bear us up; carry us on in our way and carry us home at last. If we learn to trust and love Him, we need not be anxious about our remaining days or years. God will provide for us and watch over us, nourish, and preserve us forever.
