Daniel 5:12 – “He did this because Daniel, whom the king called Belteshazzar, was found to have a keen mind and knowledge and understanding, and also the ability to interpret dreams, explain riddles and solve difficult problems. Call for Daniel, and he will tell you what the writing means.”
We often think of Daniel’s bravery in connection with the lion’s den. But there are at least two more things we can learn from him. Daniel was wise, and he did not compromise on his beliefs. Daniel was so wise that even the kings preferred him to interpret signs and dreams over their astrologers and magicians. And Daniel refused to compromise on His faith in the one true God, even if it meant imminent death.
Daniel 1:17 states that it was God who gave Daniel wisdom, understanding and the ability to interpret dreams and visions. He was so wise that of all the people in the land, only he could understand the four words that were written by a divine hand in the king’s palace. So, how did Daniel receive this wisdom? This footnote from the Amplified Bible sheds some light…
“The answer is that any wise man who was present there probably could recognize the four inscribed words, but only the uncompromising man of God – who knew God through daily fellowship and communion with Him, who was so dedicated to Him that God could speak to him and through him – only such a man could tell what the words really meant.”
