Colossians 3:12
Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering…
Today’s verse talks about being chosen by God – it is more than just an identity; it is also a commitment. Paul points out that we are chosen, sanctified, and dearly loved. We are first reminded of who we are, and then told what we must do. Our deeds, therefore, are a result of our new nature in Christ.
The phrase “put on” indicates a daily decision, similar to when we dress ourselves each morning. Tender mercy, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience are not natural human characteristics; rather, they are virtues we deliberately put on like clothing. These attributes shape our behaviour toward others and become especially important in helping us handle difficult circumstances and strained relationships.
Another lesson from this scripture is that spiritual growth will be evident. When we have a strong relationship with Christ, our attitudes begin to reflect His love. Instead of being judgmental, our hearts are filled with compassion, humility replaces pride, and anger is restrained through patience. These moral qualities become a testimony of God’s presence in our lives.
As you go about your day, ask yourself what spiritual clothing you are wearing. Choose compassion instead of harshness, kindness instead of indifference, and humility instead of self-importance. By putting on the character of Christ, we become a mirror that reflects God’s love to those around us.
Prayer: Lord, thank You for choosing me and calling me beloved. During this season of Lent, help me develop a daily habit of putting on compassion, kindness, humility, and patience. Shape my heart to reflect Your character in all I say and do. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
