1 John 4:8
He who does not love does not know God, for God is love.
Today’s verse helps us recognise what a real relationship with God looks like. It is not setting a standard of perfection, but revealing a spiritual truth: knowing God always produces love, because God is love. Everything God does flows from His loving nature. When we know God personally – not just knowing facts about Him, but living in relationship with Him – His love begins to transform us from within. It changes how we see others, shapes the way we speak, and guides how we respond, especially in difficult moments.
The Apostle John uses the Greek word agape to describe a love that is selfless and sacrificial in nature. Truly knowing God goes far beyond simply having information about Him. It means living in a daily relationship with Him, walking closely with Him, listening to His guidance, and allowing His Spirit to shape our hearts. As this relationship deepens, love stops feeling like a duty and begins to flow naturally. We start responding with patience instead of anger, forgiveness instead of resentment, and compassion instead of criticism.
Love is not based on feelings or convenience, but chooses what is right even when it costs something. God showed this love by sending His Son, Jesus, to give His life for us, and that same love should be seen in those who follow Him. As we draw closer to God, His love naturally flows through us to others.
Think of a tree planted near water. It does not strain to produce fruit; fruit appears naturally because the roots are alive and nourished. If there is no fruit, the problem is not the branches; it’s the roots. In the same way, love is the fruit of knowing God. When the connection is real, love shows up.
This Lenten season, set apart time each day to grow in intimacy with the Lord, so that you may be a vessel of His love, overflowing into the lives of those around you.
