John 3:16
God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
Today’s verse reminds us that God takes the first step. He is holy and just, yet deeply loving. Though He saw our sin and weakness, He did not abandon us. Instead, He chose to love a broken world – a people who often turn away from Him. God’s love is more than a feeling; it moved Him to act. He sent His Son to give His life for us. Jesus took the punishment our sins deserved, so that we could be forgiven and restored to a right relationship with God.
God’s promise is for those who believe – who trust Jesus fully, accept Him, and depend on what He has already done for us. The result is clear: without Christ, we perish, but in Christ, we receive life – not mere existence, but eternal life with God.
John 3:16 shows us that salvation is God’s work from start to finish. Love planned it, grace provided it, and faith receives it.
Picture a lifeguard trying to save a drowning swimmer. The lifeguard does not shout instructions or wait for the swimmer to save himself. He dives in, fights the current, and pushes a rescue float into the swimmer’s hands. The swimmer is saved not by strength, but by holding on.
Faith is simply choosing to rely on the Lord. It’s not the strength of your grip that saves you, but the strength of the Saviour who never lets go.
As we begin the season of Lent today, let’s reflect on God’s love in offering His Son for our salvation. May this be a season of remembering the sacrifice of Christ and returning to God’s love, even as we hold fast to the promise of eternal life.
