Suffering for Doing Good

1 Peter 3:17

“For it is better, if it is the will of God, to suffer for doing good than for doing evil.”

We all strive to avoid suffering, but the Bible reminds us that not all suffering is created equal. While some suffer as a result of making poor decisions, Peter explains that there is another type of suffering that results from doing good deeds and maintaining one’s moral convictions.

The world may misinterpret us, oppose us, or even reject us when we live for Christ. However, there is a purpose to such suffering when it occurs in accordance with God’s will. It improves our moral fiber, fortifies our faith, and enables us to bear witness to God’s grace at work in us. There is honor in suffering for the name of Christ, as opposed to the shame of suffering for transgression.

Our best example is Jesus. Despite being sinless, He endured suffering in order to save us. We share in His sufferings and shine His light on the world when we suffer for Him. When we give our suffering to God, it never goes to waste because it becomes a part of His story of redemption in us.

Therefore, even if doing good comes at a cost, let’s not give up. Because God will reward faithfulness in due time, and our endurance will reveal His glory.

Prayer: Lord, help me stand firm in faith, even when it leads to suffering. Give me strength to endure trials for righteousness’ sake, and let my life reflect the example of Christ. May my suffering bring glory to You and point others to Your truth. Amen.
