When We Are Tired We Need Rest

-Matthew 11:29-

“Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.”

Jesus wants us to ‘take’ His yoke upon us, because His yoke is lighter than that which is not His. Then He helps us carry our own weights, our burdens, our challenges.

Jesus also wants us to ‘learn’ from Him because He is the Only One who can actually teach us how to be like Him. He is unique, there is absolutely no one who compares to Him. He is “the’ only teacher from whom we must learn, not only by His words, but also by His multitude of actions.

Jesus is gentle – Jesus is lowly – Jesus is humble – Jesus is meek.

All these qualities we must inherit and learn from Him. Gentleness is a fruit of the Spirit, so is patience. The dictionary describes ‘meek’ as humbly patient or quiet in nature when provoked. And we must be peacemakers: “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God.” (Matthew 5:9).

Jesus wants us to be like Him; to develop a character in ourselves that reflects Him. And the more we become like Him, the more we will find rest for our souls.

“The tired comers are at once refreshed by Christ; these accept His service and teaching, and in performing it – find further rest.” (Pulpit Commentary).
