Psalm 107:15
Oh, that men would give thanks to the Lord for His goodness, and for His wonderful works to the children of men.
This verse emphasizes the importance of gratitude towards God, a recurring theme throughout the Psalms. The psalmist reminds us to thank God for His goodness and His wonderful works. Gratitude is not just spoken – it’s a heart posture that acknowledges God’s sovereignty and faithfulness. In the Old Testament, thanksgiving was expressed through offerings, pointing to God’s covenant relationship with His people.
The Hebrew word hesed – God’s steadfast love and covenant mercy – reveals His unwavering devotion. From His promises to Abraham to His patience with Israel, God’s love reveals its fullness in Christ (John 3:16). His love is unchanging, never weary, and always sufficient, giving us every reason to be grateful.
Paul’s words in 1 Corinthians 13 reflect divine love, urging us to embody it in our relationships. Today, as we celebrate Mother’s Day, we see a glimpse of such love in the way mothers care. Their patience and sacrifice reflect God’s hesed. Their devotion reminds us to thank God for His works and for mothers who reflect His heart.
The psalm also highlights the human tendency to wander. Like the prodigal son, some people stray, suffer consequences, and then cry out in repentance. God, in His mercy, restores them. Two truths emerge: the heart’s proneness to wander and the Lord’s inexhaustible mercy to forgive and bless again. Just as a mother welcomes her child with compassion, the Lord restores His people when they return. Gratitude, then, flows from recognizing His endless mercy and the everyday reflections of His love in those who nurture us.
May we honor mothers by thanking the Lord for His goodness and for their steadfast love. Happy Mother’s Day to all mothers!
